MIT’s Day of Design
Sri Adwayananda Public School Launches MIT Day of Design Program for Grades 7–9
Sri Adwayananda Public School is proud to introduce an exciting new learning experience for students in Standards 7–9 through a collaboration with MIT’s Day of Design, an international initiative created by the Morningside Academy of Design (MAD) at MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. This partnership brings globally recognized design-thinking education directly to our campus, helping students develop the skills needed to solve real-world problems with creativity, innovation, and purpose.
About MIT’s Day of Design
Day of Design is a groundbreaking MIT initiative offering free, open-source, hands-on design activities for classrooms worldwide. Developed by the MIT Morningside Academy for Design (MAD) and the WPS Institute, with support from the MIT Museum and the MIT pK–12 Initiative, the program empowers pK–12 learners to think like designers, engineers, and human-centered problem-solvers.
The initiative engages students in:
- Critical thinking and collaboration
- Open-ended, real-world problem solving
- Interdisciplinary learning across science, art, engineering, technology, and humanities
- Environmental and user-centered design practices
Inspired by successful MIT programs such as Day of AI and Day of Climate, Day of Design supports educators with ready-to-use classroom slides, tutorials, videos, and structured design activities.
Our First Module: The Cosmic Comfort Workshop
To kick off this collaboration, students participated in the “Cosmic Comfort Workshop,” an engaging design challenge inspired by MIT’s well-known Space Architectures class. This module encouraged students to explore what human life in outer space might require and how design can improve comfort, safety, and everyday living beyond Earth.
Through guided steps in ideation, sketching, prototyping, and feedback, students learned the foundational skills of design thinking, including:
- Empathizing with user needs
- Brainstorming and ideation
- Iterative prototyping
- Creative problem-solving
- Presenting and communicating ideas
The workshop was completely hands-on, collaborative, and aligned with 21st-century learning goals.
Innovative Student Creations
The creativity displayed by our students was truly inspiring. Their imaginative concepts demonstrated originality, curiosity, and an ability to make connections across disciplines. Some exciting examples included:
- Taco-Generator
- Foldable Football Ground
- Ciri Bike (cricket kit + bike)
- Food Laptop Storage
- Geofa Sofa (Geo internet + Sofa)
- Coudress (Couch + Dress)
- NN Sketch Book (Computer + Drawing Book)
Each invention showcased a blend of comfort, practicality, and futuristic thinking.
A Milestone in STEM and Design Education
The introduction of MIT’s Day of Design at Sri Adwayananda Public School marks an important milestone in our commitment to STEM learning, creativity, and holistic education. By giving students access to world-class design resources, we are helping them develop the mindset and skills needed to thrive in an innovation-driven world.
We are extremely proud of our young learners and look forward to expanding this collaboration with more modules, challenges, and opportunities for design-based learning.
